Building Leaders. A Legacy of Mentoring.
Antonio Mendes is Lead by the Name consultant for Church and Ministry leadership. Mentoring is Lead by the Name and his passion. In 1979, when he was at a seminary, he was invited to join a group of around 20 for church planting. At the same time, an American missionary, Karl Lachler joined the group; Karl started to mentor Mendes organically, hiking, in the office, or enjoying a meal by imparting wisdom to and sharing knowledge and experiences. The impact was so significant in Mendes's life that in honor of Karl’s life, one of his sons was named after him, and the relationship still is alive today. Karl lives in Michigan and Mendes in California, but letters, phone calls, emails, and personal visits keep this relationship alive. Both are retired and still serving the Lord.
Lead by the Name is starting a Mentoring Program for pastors in Brazil in partnership with Pregue a Palavra, a local pastoral training organization. The program will begin with eight pastors recruited meeting bi-weekly with Mendes. The goal is an organic time relationship-based, learning together. The meeting will be held online because Mendes, after retirement, has moved to California to be close to his children and grandchildren.” In addition, the program consists of Mendes's occasional trips to Brazil for 2-3 days, gathering with these pastors for in-person time.
This program will start in May 2023. We are an organic and relation-driven organization; we are open to the mentor and mentee deciding when the meetings change from bi-weekly to a different timeline or end. It’s not about sessions; it’s about relationships; it’s learning together, so it must change naturally and must be between the mentee and the mentor. Adding to the individual Mentoring Program, Mendes will join a monthly group to serve them by imparting wisdom, knowledge, and experiences.
