Elon Musk has gained a reputation for his approach to streamlining work processes and making them more efficient. His management style revolves around working smarter, reducing meetings, encouraging individuals to leave if they aren't contributing much, and questioning hierarchies. He explained these principles in an email to the Tesla team, outlining six rules for enhancing productivity. The email emphasized the importance of meetings in boosting efficiency.
Recognizing the significance of participation and collaborative efforts during meetings reflects my belief that meaningful collaboration acts as a catalyst for growth and success within any context. I strongly advocate for the value of meetings as platforms for achieving growth, enhancing processes, and attaining positive outcomes.
Drawing from my 25 years of business experience in both profit-driven and non-profit sectors, I have observed that such gatherings tend to prioritize the leader’s inclination to showcase their activities rather than promoting collective engagement. Recently, I took part in a meeting with the stated objective of listening to the team’s input. However, whether intentionally or unintentionally, the leader monopolized the conversation for an hour. Within the discourse, clear directives were outlined regarding the path the leader intended to take in the upcoming period. Additionally, there were exercises provided, predominantly centered around personal reflections. As a result, there was a lack of engagement from participants.
For collaboration to work well, the team needs both time and the freedom to share their thoughts and ideas. Leaders, if you want to foster growth, enhance processes, and attain positive outcomes, you must be open to learning, listening, and being confident in your leadership. Without these qualities, organizations can end up relying too much on the leader and lose sight of the team’s potential.
