God’s will is always better than ours!
Have you ever bought a house? Our family recently went through the home-buying
process. We were excited about our new future home, and after looking at some
houses, we found a place. Much to our disappointment, this house already had nine
offers after only two days on the market. We had no chance of buying that house. We
were so frustrated that it was not God’s will for us.
In John 4:34, we see Jesus teaching us that God’s will is always better than our will.
“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.”
In this one verse, we see Jesus teach three important lessons about God’s will. First
lesson: God’s will should be our desire. Jesus used the idea of “my food” to do His will.
Food is essential for life. Without food, you will die. So, Jesus says that all He needs is
to do God’s will. When Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane, facing the reality of his
approaching death, He prayed: “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from
me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39)
Second lesson: “He who sent me.” Even Jesus knew that the Father’s will is always
better. He knew He needed to go through God’s will, so His plan was accomplished.
Third lesson: God has a plan. Jesus knew it was necessary to endure intense suffering
because God had a redemption plan, and only Jesus could do that. We needed a
perfect sheep to bring justice to God’s wrath. God’s wrath is paid. We are free from
condemnation. That’s God’s plan for us. Salvation!
After two weeks of struggling to buy a house, we found one, and our offer was
accepted. God had something special for us. God’s plan is not always ours, but His
mercy is more in every situation. It is not about us; it is about HIM.
