Shoulder-to-Shoulder Discipleship: Nurturing Christ-Like Relationships in the Journey of Faith
When we think about discipleship, often, we envision a formal setting with pre-assigned tasks and discussions of book chapters and/or biblical passages. However, the true essence of discipleship reveals itself primarily in the role of the discipler, who must redefine themselves not as an immaculate and inquisitorial figure, but as a humble, merciful leader who knows that, if not for the grace of God poured out on their own journey, the path for Christian leaders to sharpen one another and strive to be more like Christ would be as difficult as that of the disciple. In this context, shoulder-to-shoulder discipleship emerges as a process resembling Christ.
The focal point of discipleship should revolve around likeness to the person of Christ. Leaders not only share unshakable truths from the word of God but also walk side by side with their disciples, sharing their own victories, longings, and failures. It is a commitment of mutual love and service, where learning is not just intellectual/technical but organic, delving deep into our being and shaping us step by step into the likeness of the Father.
In shoulder-to-shoulder discipleship, words come to life through actions, and the teachings of Christ become lived in every interaction and shared experience between the discipler and the disciple. It is an invitation to a deep relationship, where the deepest scrutiny of our being is allowed, where we demonstrate our greatest vulnerabilities and fears, but also where our greatest motivations and joys are shared.
It is a process of mutual growth, where both are shaped, with Christ as the focus! Often, as the discipler shares their journey, the disciple rejoices and contributes as well, and in the end, everyone grows, but above all, the Kingdom will be glorified, as more and more workers are prepared for the transformation of this world. We seek a profile of a discipler who not only imparts knowledge but also desires to create and deepen relationships that endure beyond the formal moments of discipleship. It is a journey together in loyalty, faithfulness, and commitment, where the leader and the disciple support each other, even in the most challenging moments of their lives.
Therefore, to the disciples, seek first a person who wants to walk shoulder to shoulder with you and teach you in the different possibilities of everyday life! As for you, discipler, seek to be more humble, grateful, and aware that everything you have depends solely and exclusively on the grace and mercy of God poured out in your life! May we transmit not only knowledge but also build deep and meaningful relationships that transform lives and glorify the name of the One who has called us to such a great mission.
