What happens when we value expertise over character?

Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 1 Timothy 3:1

In the Book of 1 Timothy, Timothy receives some wise leadership advice from his mentor, Paul. It's advice we can take to heart too. Paul starts by telling him that leadership begins with desire. Then he gives Timothy a list of qualifications for leadership. (1 Tim. 3:1-7) Interestingly enough, the list is more about character than expertise. Paul's message: who you are is more significant than what you know. His primary concern for a leader is heart, not mind!

Today, many organizations are led by leaders brought in primarily for their expertise, not character. Power, coercion, and manipulation are the result. It's easy to misunderstand Paul's teaching regarding the desire to lead—which is where this unhealthy phenomenon stems from. The desire Paul is expressing is about serving others and not ourselves. It's easy to seek money and power rather than serving people through relationships, care, and love. That's why Paul's message is so important!

Relationship, care, and love require character. Money and power require expertise. Expertise can be developed. Character cannot. When we serve others, there's no need to manipulate to achieve the organizational goals we desire.

Do you agree that organizations are being led by expertise over character? What are the implications of this reality today?
