Bridging the Gap: Integrating Planning and Financial Literacy into Christ-Centered Leadership Education
On the journey of Christ-centered leadership, one gap that is often observed is the lack of emphasis on planning and financial literacy in seminaries and theological schools. While these institutions are dedicated to nurturing the spiritual and theological knowledge of leaders, they often overlook the practical aspects of a church’s day-to-day operations, which are essential to ministry service. Why does this happen?
One possible reason lies in the traditional design of seminaries, which focus exclusively on theological subjects, disconnected from other non-theological disciplines. However, neglecting the importance of planning and finance is to ignore the practical wisdom needed to be good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us as leaders.
Reflecting on Proverbs 27:23: "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds," we see that the instruction goes beyond the literal flock. This verse reminds us of a leader’s responsibility to know and care for their spiritual flock, but it also implies a deep understanding of the practical and material needs of that same flock.
Biblical teaching should influence every area of our daily lives, including resource management and planning. Jesus Himself spoke about the importance of faithfully managing the talents entrusted to us (Matthew 25:14-30).
In addition, the lack of knowledge in planning and finance can lead to unnecessary challenges for churches and Christian organizations. Too often, well-intentioned ministries struggle with financial issues simply because they have not been equipped with the skills needed to manage their resources effectively. Theological education should be comprehensive, preparing leaders to face the challenges of the contemporary world with wisdom, integrity, and ethics. This means taking the spiritual knowledge they have gained and integrating it with practical day-to-day skills, empowering leaders to be faithful stewards in every area of their lives and ministries.
Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the importance of teaching planning and finance, incorporating these subjects into the traditional curricula taught in our seminaries and churches. Only through this approach, alongside the daily care of preaching the Word of God, will Christ-centered leaders be able to embrace useful tools for facing the challenges of the contemporary world. May we seek a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the call to serve, equipping ourselves with practical tools for the advancement and growth of the Kingdom of God, for His glory and the well-being of His people.
