Embracing Intentional Relational Leadership: The Path to Empowered and Effective Leadership

Eduardo Mendes · 2024–2025 · 1 min read

Today's leadership often falls short of what it should be, especially in many organizations. That brings us to a crucial debate: process-driven leadership versus people-driven leadership. Leading through people is undoubtedly more challenging and time-consuming, since it involves navigating different opinions and personalities. However, avoiding those complexities can reduce a leader to little more than a follower—someone who would rather be directed than take the lead. True leadership is about steering the ship and guiding people to new heights without compromising vision and goals.

At this crossroads, we see a shift toward what we call Intentional Relational Leadership (IRL). This approach recognizes that people are the lifeblood of any organization. While earning the genuine commitment of team members is no easy task, leaders who embrace IRL face a demanding yet rewarding journey. It requires intentionality, patience, ego management, and genuine care for others. In an IRL framework, leadership becomes a collaborative effort in which diverse perspectives are valued and team members are empowered to contribute to the organization's success.

IRL is also deeply rooted in Christ-centered leadership. Jesus Christ exemplified this by leading with love and care, always focused on His mission to do the Father's will. His style of leadership was not about control, but about influence, guiding others through compassion and understanding. In business, decisions often revolve around people, processes, and products. An IRL leader prioritizes people, making sure they lead the way in shaping and driving processes and products. This approach fosters a culture of trust and accountability, where people feel valued and motivated to excel. Though challenging, IRL is the way forward in today's changing world, offering a leadership style that truly empowers and lifts others up, drives sustainable success, and promotes a healthy organizational culture.
