Is Cultural Awareness Essential for Leaders?

Cultural awareness is the ability to recognize value, celebrate differences, and engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. This awareness has become increasingly important in today’s globalized world. As immigration and refugee movements increase, people are moving to work in different countries. As leaders, we can seize this opportunity and develop leaders who are ready to face the challenges and opportunities that a multicultural environment brings to any organization.

Many different people from many different cultures are working together to accomplish the same vision. With advances in technology and transportation, people from different cultures can now connect, interact, communicate, and live together more easily. This reality brings relationship challenges we are not used to, resulting in a greater need for people to be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences.

As leaders, we are encouraged to grow in cultural awareness, and that is much simpler than it sounds. Books, courses, and training can help, but without the right attitude, our intentions can fall short. Understanding and respect are necessary. When we genuinely want to learn from different ways of doing things and hold the mindset that we do not necessarily have the best, most efficient, or only way of doing things, we maintain a teachable spirit.

As leaders, we must foster understanding and respect among different cultures. When we are aware of and value the values, beliefs, and customs of other cultures:

We are more likely to approach intercultural interactions with an open mind and a willingness to learn. This can help reduce misunderstandings and conflicts when people from different cultures interact.

We are more likely to create a results-oriented environment in which everyone feels they are contributing effectively. This will increase collaboration, creativity, and productivity. Conflicts within teams or communities will be less frequent.

At Lead by the Name, the cultural awareness program aims to provide a shared understanding of cultural differences and help leaders develop team members with different perspectives. Our assumptions for this program are centered on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We believe Jesus Christ cared about cultural diversity during His time on earth. Jesus' mission was to do His Father's will, and God is the author of human diversity.
