"Keep Swimming": The Theology of Perseverance in a Turbulent World

If you're a parent, chances are you've watched Finding Nemo—probably more times than you can count. Whether it was playing in the background while your child was captivated by the vibrant underwater world, or you were genuinely enjoying the story right alongside them, this animated classic has a way of captivating both kids and adults.

But beyond its charm and humor, Finding Nemo carries a message that feels especially relevant in today's world—a world full of uncertainty, setbacks, and relentless challenges. In the middle of it all, one simple yet profound line from Dory stands out: "Just keep swimming."

Like Marlin, many of us wrestle with fear, doubt, and discouragement as we navigate life's struggles. Yet the Bible repeatedly reminds us that perseverance is essential to our journey of faith. No matter how overwhelming our circumstances may seem, God calls us to keep moving forward, trusting in His promises and His perfect plan.

Paul captures this beautifully in Philippians 3:14:

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

It's easy to feel paralyzed, especially when bad news seems to dominate the headlines and personal struggles feel never-ending. But Scripture encourages us to keep going, even when the road ahead is unclear. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to lean on God rather than our own understanding. And while life brings financial hardship, broken relationships, health crises, and countless other trials, James 1:2-3 tells us that these challenges produce perseverance, shaping us into stronger believers.

Perseverance doesn't mean we won't face hardship—it means we keep moving despite it. In a world where giving up often seems like the easiest option, Hebrews 12:1-2 urges us to run with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus. When exhaustion sets in and quitting feels tempting, faith calls us to take just one more step.

But perseverance isn't just about movement—it's about moving with purpose, trusting that each step brings us closer to God's plan. When the waters seem overwhelming, when doubt creeps in, and when life feels like a storm, we hold fast to the truth that God is leading us.

Dory's words echo a deep spiritual truth: no matter what comes your way, keep believing, keep trusting, and keep swimming.

Our God is in control. He is the King of kings, and His plans will never be thwarted. As we make our way through life, we are ultimately swimming toward our eternal home with Him. One day, there will be no more pain, no more suffering, and no more struggle. We will be in His glorious presence, worshiping Him in perfect joy and peace.

Until that day comes, we must keep pressing forward, trusting in His sovereignty and holding on to His promises. Because when life knocks you down, you already know what to do:
