Listening, Learning, and Living: The Life Steps of a Follower of Jesus
Following Jesus is a lifelong journey that transforms our perspective, shaping both our thoughts and our actions (Luke 10:25-37). The way we relate to others reflects where our influence and priorities are rooted (Matthew 6:33). Paul, in Romans 12:9-21, lays out a powerful framework for true discipleship—one that calls for our commitment to three essential steps: listening, learning, and living our faith.
The first step in our spiritual growth is listening—not just hearing, but truly tuning in to God’s Word. When we listen carefully, we allow His truth to shape our minds and hearts. Romans 12:9 tells us to love sincerely, and sincere love begins with listening—to God, to His wisdom, and to those around us.
Listening is not passive; it requires effort and openness. When we listen to God’s Word, we receive guidance that aligns our lives with His will (1 John 2:17). Proverbs reminds us of the value of wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14; 12:5; 19:20-21), reinforcing the importance of listening not only to Scripture, but also to the wisdom of others who walk in faith. True listening fosters empathy and understanding, equipping us to love and care for others as Christ calls us to do.
After listening comes learning—deepening our understanding of God’s truth. True learning is not merely about gaining knowledge, but allowing that knowledge to transform us. Romans 12:10-16 emphasizes humility, kindness, and unity, and all of these require a transformed mindset.
Paul exhorts us in Romans 12:2 to renew our minds so that we may discern the will of God. Learning from Jesus’ teachings helps us shift our perspective away from cultural influences and personal emotions, anchoring us in biblical wisdom. But learning is not just about storing up information—it’s about applying it daily. We do not truly know something until we live it out.
The final step is living our faith. Belief must move beyond words and become action. Romans 12:17-21 calls us to respond to evil with good, pursue peace, and trust God’s justice. The true mark of a disciple is how he reflects Christ’s love, especially in challenging circumstances.
Living our faith means embodying grace, patience, and love in tangible ways. It means forgiving as Jesus forgave (John 8:1-11), serving others selflessly, and choosing righteousness even when it is difficult. When we live out God’s truth, we become walking testimonies of His transforming power.
