Introduction
The story of the adulterous woman, told in John 8:1-11, is one of the most striking moments in Jesus’ ministry. In this passage, we see His love and grace displayed in an extraordinary way, while at the same time He does not ignore the reality of sin. To better understand this lesson, we need to reflect on two essential aspects: what we should not do and what we should do when dealing with sin — both our own and others’.
Romans 3:23 – “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Psalm 103:8-10 – “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.”
The Context of the Story (John 8:1-2)
The scene takes place in the Temple in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles, a time of celebration and thanksgiving. Jesus was teaching the people when He was interrupted by the Pharisees and teachers of the law, who brought in a woman caught in adultery. However, their goal was not to seek justice, but to trap Jesus. This context reveals the religious hypocrisy of those men, who used the law not to uphold justice, but to manipulate the situation for their own interests.
Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Matthew 7:5 – “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
What We Should Not Do (John 8:3-6)
1. We should not act with hypocrisy and partial judgment. The Pharisees brought only the woman, ignoring the man who had also committed adultery. This attitude reveals selective justice, driven by self-interest. They saw themselves as under grace, but applied only the law to her.
Matthew 23:23-24 – “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.”
