Treasures of Ministry: God’s Grace in a Man’s Life Journey.

“Treasures of Ministry” is a new series in which Pastor Mendes, our Church and Ministry Leadership Consultant, reveals the precious and enriching experiences he has gathered over his 40 years as a church planter and senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Atibaia, Brazil. In this series, these treasures symbolize memories, personal growth, and the profound impact on people, the church, and on him personally. They reveal transformative encounters that echo God’s grace.

During the early years of ministry at First Baptist Church of Atibaia, the congregation welcomed a family facing challenges. The father was going through a turbulent season, marked by family crises resulting from a divorce and remarriage. Three daughters from the first marriage joined him and his second wife, adding a layer of complexity to the blended family. The main obstacle was adjusting to this new reality, particularly with the three daughters now living alongside the younger children from the second marriage. Going into the many trials this man faced as he navigated this new family dynamic, with all the children together, is beyond the scope of this story.

You may be wondering: where is the pearl in such a complex situation? The pearl is the father! This man, by embracing a worthy commitment and a desire to faithfully obey the Word of God, became one of the remarkable members and friends God brought into my ministry. His humble posture and willingness to follow pastoral guidance, cultivating a deep relationship with the Lord, made him so admirable that he rightly deserves recognition as one of the pearls of our ministry. The pearl did not emerge alone; beside him stands his wife, a blessed woman. Perfection in that journey was not reality, but God’s intervention, by His grace, restored them to a point where today I consider him a pearl of immeasurable value. “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.” Titus 2:11.
