God’s Will Is Always Better Than Ours!

Have you ever bought a house? Our family went through the home-buying process. We were excited about our new home and what the future would hold. After looking at several houses, we found a place. Long story short, that house already had nine offers in just two days on the market. We had no chance of buying that house. We were so frustrated because we thought it was not God’s will for us.

In John 4:34, we see Jesus teaching us that God’s will is always better than ours. In just one verse, Jesus teaches us three important lessons about God’s will. First: God’s will should be our desire. Jesus used the idea of "my food" to describe doing the will of the One who sent Him. Food is essential for life. Without food for a while, you die. So Jesus says that all He needs is to do God’s will. Remember that in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed: "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." Second lesson: "the one who sent me." Even Jesus, God Himself, knew that the Father’s will is always better. He knew He needed to go through God’s will so that His plan would be fulfilled. Third lesson: God has a plan. Jesus knew it was necessary to go through all of that because God had a plan—the plan of redemption—and only Jesus could carry it out. We needed a perfect Lamb to satisfy the justice of God’s wrath. God’s wrath has been paid. We are free from condemnation. That is God’s plan for us: salvation!

After two weeks of fighting to buy a house, we found a home, and our offer was accepted. God had something special for us. God’s plan is not always ours, but His mercy is greater in every situation. This lesson helps us understand that it is not about us; it is about HIM.
