The Heart of Church Planting

At the heart of every church planting effort is a deep care for people (shepherding) and a faithful commitment to the Word of God (preaching). These two roles lay the foundation for everything else. From that foundation grow three practices: evangelism, discipleship, and community engagement, principles rooted in Acts 2 and Ephesians 4.

In Acts 2, Peter preached about the death and resurrection of Jesus. His words didn’t just add numbers to the church — they transformed lives. Evangelism is not an event; it is a daily commitment to share the Gospel through preaching, conversation, and a life that reflects Christ.

In Ephesians 4:12-13, Paul emphasizes the importance of discipleship — equipping people for ministry and building up the church. Discipleship is not just about teaching Bible lessons; it is about walking alongside people, living out the principles, standing with them in their struggles, and encouraging them to grow in their relationship with Christ.

In Acts 2:42-47, we see the picture of a church family that shared life, cared for one another, and met each other’s needs. Community engagement is a central part of being the church. Through acts of kindness, service, and compassion, the church becomes a living example of God’s love, caring for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those around it.

These three practices — evangelism, discipleship, and community engagement — are connected. Evangelism invites people to the church, discipleship helps them grow in their relationship with Christ, and community engagement displays the love of Christ to the world.
