Trusting in God’s Unchanging Goodness
The song Goodness of God resonates with many biblical truths about God’s faithfulness and enduring goodness, regardless of our circumstances. When we sing "Your goodness is running after me," it echoes Scripture that reminds us of His constant pursuit and care for us.
When life is going well, it is easy to recognize God’s goodness. In seasons of blessing, we remember Psalm 23:6, which says: "Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." God’s goodness is not passive — it actively pursues us. His love and mercy are always with us, ensuring that even in times of abundance or peace, His presence is evident.
However, the challenge comes when life does not line up with our plans. In times of hardship, disappointment, or injustice, it is harder to declare, "I surrender all." Even then, though, God’s goodness remains constant. Romans 8:28 encourages us with this promise: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This verse assures us that God is at work in every situation, even in our struggles, bringing about a good we may not yet see or understand.
In times of pain, suffering, or confusion, we may feel that God is distant or silent. Yet the Bible reminds us that His goodness does not change with our circumstances. Lamentations 3:22-23 declares: "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!" Even in the darkest seasons, God’s mercy and faithfulness are renewed daily, constantly at work in our lives.
Our human limitations often keep us from seeing the bigger picture, but Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to trust in God’s wisdom: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Trusting God means surrendering our limited perspective, believing that He is guiding us with His goodness even when the road ahead feels uncertain.
Finally, when we give our lives and fully surrender to God’s will, we echo the words of Jesus Himself in Luke 22:42: "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." Even in His most difficult moment, Jesus trusted the Father’s goodness, surrendering completely to His plan. This ultimate act of surrender reminds us that God’s goodness sometimes leads us through the valley, not around it — but always for our good and for His glory.
As we hold on to these promises, we can sing "Your goodness is running after me," even when life feels overwhelming, because we know that His goodness and mercy will never fail.
